Next week our Fitness Boot Campers start what has been referred to as the “Fat Burning Phase”. Starting on Monday all our efforts will go to towards Metabolic Conditioning.

Sign up here for ONLY $175 for a limited time: Add to Cart

Metabolic Conditioning is a combination of cardio and strength training. Not only do you burn more calories during a workout like this, but you also get a metabolic effect that can last 3 - 5 hours after you are done. So you are walking around half the day with an elevated metabolism!! When your body is efficiently burning fat all day, instead of that slow boring hour on the treadmill or another monotonous circuit on machines, you get much more out of your time spent in the gym.

Join us and I will coach you through 3 sessions per week for the next 3 weeks. You will see the difference a metabolic conditioning program like this makes. You will improve your body composition, feel more agile, and have more energy.

Rules for joining:
- No pain (if you are hurt, training like this will only make things worse… call or email me about getting that checked out so that we can give you some exercises to alleviate some of the stresses causing you pain.
- No whining… We will have set time slots for you to come to classes. If you really want to get results you will come to those spots and you won’t complain that the times are not convenient for you…. Make it convenient for you.
- You show up ready to go. There are 168 hours in a week. I am asking you to be “up” for three of them. If you go hard in those three hours a week you will see a training effect that lasts a lot more than those 3 hours you are here.
- You commit to the nutritional plan that we will give you. You will get all our nutritional info and a grocery list of do’s and dont’s. Following this is 70% of the program!

When we sit our shoulders tend to roll forward and over time this can create poor posture and a tight Thoracic Spine (Upper Back). When our Thoracic Spine is tight and limited in extension or rotation it can create problems for the low back and the shoulder joints.

Here is a video that specifically addresses lack of extension in the Thoracic Spine.

As fall sports are coming to an end we are gearing up and getting very exciting for a productive off-season of winter programming.

During our off-season training programs we put a large emphasis on improving power production. This helps improve vertical leap, running speed, throwing, hitting and shooting velocity, agility, as well as many other desirable performance attributes.

Speaking of increasing power…

This past Friday I presented a national webinar to the trainers of Equinox Fitness Clubs on the newest methods of Power Training Progressions.

Since I have prepared this material for the webinar I figured why not use it for this week’s info night?

This Thursday, October 27th I will be presenting this topic in another info night at the new training center in Islip. Although the Equinox Trainers got the benefit of the info they did not get to try the exercises hands on. In this info night we will get both. The info…. plus the demonstrations.

Power Training Progressions
From athletes to the general population… we all use power. If we move with speed, we need power training. Unfortunately, Power Training is often progressed too quickly or not emphasized enough.

Join Coach Frank Dolan as he explains how to improve performance as well as get the most out of your fitness program through the use of proper Power Training Progressions.

In this meeting you will:
- Understand the commonly used Power Training Exercises that could be hurting you or your athlete.
- Learn proper use of Power Training and how to incorporate into your program
- Be professionally coached through several progressions
- Go home with the confidence that you are doing things correctly

What is the first exercise you think of when you think of “Core” Training? Is it sit-ups or crunches?

Although sit-ups and crunches facilitate general strengthening of the abdominal muscles they are not a great choice when it comes to functionally training the core. Excessive torso flexion can also lead to lower back pain.

In order to train the core correctly you first need to think about what the core actually does:

    Keeps you upright
Provides posture
Protects your spine
Resists extension
Resists rotation
Transfers energy from lower body to upper body

In many ways the core functions while remaining completely still. A good strong core provides a point of stability to move your arms and legs around. This way you can produce force into the ground when you walk, run, and jump. And, it also allows you to transfer energy from the ground to your upper extremities when you throw, punch, or pull.

Would you like more information on how to train your core?

Wednesday, October 19th we have a new information night…. We are going in-depth into Core Training as well as going over exercise demos. If you are interested in seeing the new training space as well as getting some new ideas for your training program this is a must attend. I hope to see you there!

For the past year I have been preparing to open a sports performance training facility and it is finally coming to fruition. After 10 years of working in the health club it was time for me to pursue a singular focus. I realized that my passion was training high level athletes and highly motivated individuals. I am forever grateful for the experience I had at All 4 Sports and Fitness and will never forget the clients, members, and campers we served.

Although I am available on a consulting basis for All 4 Fitness I will not be part of the day to day operations anymore. It is tough to leave the family business and all the great memories we created there, but I am excited to be embarking on this new project.

The new training center is not just for your everyday average athlete. It is for the very best. And by best I don’t mean talent. I’m talking about the individual who expects the very best from themselves. Someone who will dedicate themselves to the process. Someone who enjoys the precision of the highest level of training and how it will affect their game or life.

We already have a few professional athletes working with us as well as high level collegiate players looking to get to the next level. Each day here has been motivating and positive. I believe it is the perfect setup for aspiring young athletes and people serious about getting results.

If you are someone or know someone who would be interested in training in an environment like that email me at coachfrankdolan@gmail.com or call 631-650-7140.

Right now we have some aggressive offers for our training programs as we are just getting started. Email or call me ASAP to get in on the best price.

To see more images of the new facility visit our Facebook Page…

When you pay money for coaching you are committed.

You will work hard in the sessions and do things outside the gym to support your progress.

Yes, of course we benefit from people paying more for training so you may be thinking “Of course he is going to say that”.

But, most times….

The people who go it alone struggle, the group training people get results, the boot campers do better… and the private clients soar!

The coaching is the same.

The commitment totally different.

Yes, that is a serious question.

You may say, “Why would I be afraid to get results?…That is completely ridiculous Frank!!”

Well here is what I think and you can absolutely disagree with me if you want.

I don’t think you are as lazy as you think you are.

I don’t think it is that difficult to set up an exercise routine and nutrition plan and then follow it.

I think the hard part is having to tell someone “no” and making time for yourself.

I think the hard part is changing your schedule around and effecting other people’s lives.

I think the hard part is that you will have to change who you are and everyone is so used to you being a certain way.

So ask yourself if you are afraid to rock the boat?

Will you let that fear get in the way of your results?

I heard someone say one time that you are either running from something or running towards something.

Where are you on that continuum and where do you want to be?

Well this year is no different.

Sometimes I sit down to my computer and it takes me a little while to think about what I want to write about. Tonight when I thought about what had the most impact on me and what I learned this year it came to me very clear and very quick.

In December of 2009 (this very night last year) I had no idea whatsoever that everything would change for me in only 30 days time. I think it was the first week of the month that my girlfriend Lindsey and I decided that we would get a Great Dane for Christmas. As excited as I was about it I knew that things would never be the same.

But, we made the DECISION that this is what we wanted to do.

So with 4 months left on our apartment lease we set out to find a house we could rent that would allow a puppy. Sound crazy! Yeah it was…. Especially since we had to pay those remaining months.

But, we made a DECISION and we were DEDICATED to doing whatever it took to have what we wanted.

Since the winter is my busiest time of year we decided to basically skip Christmas except for the family get-togethers. We didn’t decorate (we had to move at the end of the month) and didn’t exchange gifts (considering we were going to be leaving so much on the table with the apartment).

But, we made a DECISION and we were DEDICATED and that required us to SACRIFICE things we would have enjoyed.

When Charlie arrived it was awesome and tough all at the same time. Waking up in the middle of the night to take him out, cleaning up pee and poop in the house, and keeping him from eating everything in sight was all a daily occurrence.

Now a year later I couldn’t imagine my life without him around. I couldn’t imagine if we still lived in the apartment. And, I wouldn’t be working on my newest project, which will be the biggest of my career, if all of this didn’t happen last year. The entire experience really stretched me outside of my comfort zone and opened doors I didn’t know I was looking for. It was a huge year of personal growth for me.

The biggest lesson was that the entire time I had no idea how it all was going to come together. But I knew that it would and I know that it always will.

We made a DECISION, were DEDICATED, we SACRIFICED, and BELIEVED that it would happen without having to know exactly how.

My lesson for this year:

If you have an idea, inspiration, goal or dream:

DON’T LET IT STAY IN YOUR HEAD.

DECIDE to do it.

DEDICATE yourself to it no matter what.

SACRIFICE what might be getting in the way.

And BELIEVE that it will happen without needing to know exactly how it is going to turn out.

Most times it works out to be better than you expect!!

So it would be a fair statement to say that as we get older our time gets more and more valuable.

And, the quality of our time is in direct relation to how healthy we are.

If you are healthy you will be able to enjoy the things you like to do.

And, although not guaranteed, people who are healthy also tend to have more time left.

Right?

Then why is it that the average American will spend between $0 and $60 per month on their health and fitness, but will spend between $250 and $800 per month on a car.

Especially when the minute you drive off the lot it has already depreciated in value!!

It is a question of what you value…

Are your monthly expenses congruent with your values?

With the weather getting colder and the fall sport season winding down, now is the time that athletes all over the country will hit the gym to get bigger, faster, and stronger. So what about kids? Is it okay for them to lift weights? Is speed training a complete waste of time and money? What can you really do to give them a competitive edge?

Strength Training for Kids

The common myth out there is that having kids lift weights will stunt their growth. Do you believe that? It sounds like it might make sense until you actually think about the sports they play. Then you realize that what they do on the field is waaaay more strenouos than what they would do in a proper supervised strength program. The truth is that training with “Uncle Eddie who used to go to a gym” in the basement or garage is very dangerous!! In fact you can even find some certified fitness trainers doing the wrong thing with kids. Here is what you need to look for.

Make sure the program is movement based and focused on teaching proper technique. The actual strength gains that will come from your young athletes training will be better body awareness, proprioception, balance, and comfort with movements. Their bodies will become more efficient at moving through a proper squat, deadlift, pushing, and pulling activity which will in turn increase the force that they can exert. Kids do not have enough testosterone to “get big” and get the types of strength gains that an adult can. Anyone who tells you that they can is lying. Oh, yeah and absolutely NO training on seated machines!! Unless of course you don’t want them to be able to use any of the strength they gain on the field. Muscles work together in functional exercise not in isolation.

Be sure to stay away from high level jump training and plyometrics during the peak growth stage. This is the time that they are growing at the most rapid rate they will ever experience in their lives and it is important to lay off the pounding. Low level quick foot drills are a great way to still work on power safely during this period of time.

The program should be fun!! The goal of any exercise program at this age whether it be sports related or not should be focused on fun. People misconcieve what we do with kids. We are not trying to turn these kids into professional athletes. It is way too early to tell if someone can even be a candidate to DECIDE that is the path they want to take. The priority is success with athletics, movement, sports, and activities so that they associate fitness and exercise with having fun. This positive association will ensure they live a healthy life as they grow into adulthood.

Speed Training for Kids

They say you can’t “teach” speed. Well if you can’t teach speed you can’t teach throwing, kicking, or arithmetic! It is true that some people are just faster than others but that does not mean someone (including the fast ones) can’t improve on what they have! That is so ridiculous and it makes me so mad when I hear it. haha.

Okay, back to the article… So there are 4 ways to improve speed:

Functional Movement - If an athlete has areas of tightness and weakness (weak links where energy can be leaked) this will significantly reduce their ability to run fast as well as make them susceptible to injury. Simple corrective exercise strategies can help to improve movement patterns and make athletes more efficient.

Strength - Starting speed has nothing to do with “1st step quickness”. The first “push” is directly related to how strong an athlete is in relation to his or her body weight. If an athlete is too weak to put force into the ground this will inevitably slow them down.

Technique - Just like kicking a soccer ball and throwing a baseball, running is a skill. If taught the proper way, you can not only increase the efficiency and time it takes to go through a running cycle, but you can also improve the amount of force into the ground with proper foot and body placement. Correct arm action, body angle, knee drive, and foot position will all increase running speed.

Reactiveness - Here is a made up word but it means “power”. How much power can an athlete put into the ground to propel themselves forward and how quickly can they move thier legs. How quickly they can move their legs is not even close to as important as being able to put force into the ground.

So hopefully this will answer some of your questions about training young athletes.. If you have any questions feel free to comment below or shoot me a quick email at coachfrankdolan@gmail.com

And by the way, we do have some “proper” strength and speed programs for young athletes at the gym.

What do people really think about what you do? I’m not talking about people in your industry. I am talking about the general public. Do they really know what value you provide to the world?

I was talking to someone on the train recently about the computer industry and it turns out I know nothing about the behind the scenes of that industry. Now I consider myself to be pretty computer savvy. I write a regular blog, produce my own videos on my MacBook Pro, and read the Tech Crunch updates syndicated in my Google Reader account but that doesn’t mean I know the ins and outs of that industry. For whatever reason, what you do is probably perceived a certain way by the general public. From old stereotypes to news programs I am sure you have had the experience of being misrepresented by someone’s perception of your industry.

Now, what do you think about the fitness industry? Are you basing your perceptions of what it takes to live a healthy lifestyle by short sound bites on the news, or some “ripped” actress screaming at people to run up a hill. I would bet that to the degree you feel your industry is misunderstood is the degree to which you do not have an understanding of what you need to do to get in shape.

Testimonials from people who took the course this past summer:

I have made some good changes in my diet. It is definitely much healthier and I have learned some things about fueling my body for working out. I was glad to learn that healthy carbs are good for my diet. I enjoyed watching the webinars, they were informative and interesting. The reflections or homeworks at the end were also good and made me think about things. I would tell someone that if they weren’t sure what to eat for a healthy diet, then this program would be very informative. Especially if they were already working out, but not having the results that they wanted.

Theresa Paquette

I thought the program overall was very informative; I think for me the two biggest takeaways were: the Thermic effect of food, and the fact that resistance training can burn more fat than pure cardio alone. I think the price of the program was worth it for this information alone, since with this data you can build a foundation for developing a lean physique.

I appreciate all you did, and I would recommend your program to others. Thank you for your help and valuable information!

When people think about fitness they tend to think about how difficult it is….

How difficult it is to get started. How difficult that soreness period is in the beginning. How difficult it is to stay consistent. How difficult it is to come back after missing a week. How difficult it is to stop eating the junk food they are addicted to. That’s right I said addicted. And, how difficult it is to actually lose body fat even when they are in the gym on a consistent basis!!

Well, what if you chose to look at it another way. What if you thought of it as being not difficult, but different?

You see the thing is that it IS difficult to do what you are trying to do, being the person that you are right now. You need to actually become a DIFFERENT person to get the results you want to get. Sound out there? Read on….

The person you are right now, the habits, activities, social environments you are in, and of course your history makes up the shape you are in right now. What if you dropped the history, changed the habits, activities, and social environments? What would happen? You would actually be re-inventing yourself. Acting differently, participating differently, and creating habits that healthy and “in-shape” people have.

As a trainer I can get so focused on the mechanics of fat loss and getting people results. What nutritional program works, or what is the most efficient way to work out. But the bottom line is without working on you inner game, you can’t change the outer.

This may sound harsh, but I can tell you right now that you absolutely cannot lose the weight, get in shape, and look the way you want to do being the person you are right now. Actually I shouldn’t say that, you might be able to do it for a little while, but it is only a matter of time before you put the weight back on.

The trick is to gradually change who you are in the process because that is the only way to make it stick for good. Sometimes just small little adjustments and changes in perception over time can make all the difference. But, realize that your life cannot stay the same. Focus on your behaviors and doing it DIFFERENT because you will need to become someone else if you want to be someone else.

So, here is a little test….

Here are your choices:

This week you have the opportunity to go out to a nice expensive and fattening dinner. There will be a bottle of red wine, maybe some steaks or seafood…. Mmmm, sounds delicious…. This dinner will cost at a nicer local establishment between $100 and $150 for two people.

You also have the opportunity to participate in my Metabolism Makeover Program. You will get 8-weeks of webinars on how to teach yourself to speed up your metabolism, eat a healthy balanced diet, have more energy, and lose body fat. It also addresses the “inner” change that needs to happen for you to get long term results.

Each webinar is delivered to your inbox for you to watch at your convenience. Each week you will be responsible for a simple but effective homework assignment to anchor the lessons you have learned. Cost of this program is $125 for 8-weeks of nutrition education. Oh, and you also get a consultation with me at the start of the program to go over any customized nutrition needs, exercise programming, and questions you may have.

Think about what you have chosen in the past….will you chose different. And, if not now when do you intend to start.

Hard sell? I know…. But, it is only because I care and know that this is what works.

Reason #1 of Why You Should Be in Boot Camp on Monday: I KNOW WHAT YOU DID THIS SUMMER

That may sound like a horror movie and for some people as far as their fitness goes… it is! The summer is great to relax, have a good time, and escape the schedule. Problem with that is that relaxing, good times, and not having a schedule usually lead to laziness, eating and drinking, as well as skipping workouts. Now I don’t want to make you feel guilty but if it gets you going on a quality fitness program tomorrow… then I don’t mind so much.

Hope to see you in camp… http://all4sportsandfitness.com/fitness-center/fitness-boot-camp/

Reason #2 of Why You Should Be in Boot Camp on Monday: YOU CAN START AT ANY LEVEL OF FITNESS

In our camps it doesn’t matter where you are with your fitness. If you have been doing triathlons or sitting on the couch you will get an in depth assessment as well as modifications in session to make sure we are pushing you, but not so hard that you will never come back. The camp is as customizable as it can get in a group setting.

Hope to see you in camp… http://all4sportsandfitness.com/fitness-center/fitness-boot-camp/

Reason #3 of Why You Should Be in Boot Camp on Monday: IT IS PROFESSIONAL TRAINING AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE

Our fitness boot camp coaches are Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialists. They charge anywhere from $70 to $125 per hour training session. In the fitness boot camp you are splitting that cost with the other participants so the price comes in under $14 per session. Not too bad for the highest level coaching you can get anywhere on Long Island!

Hope to see you in camp… http://all4sportsandfitness.com/fitness-center/fitness-boot-camp/

Reason #4 of Why You Should Be in Boot Camp on Monday: DOING IT ON YOUR OWN TAKES MUCH LONGER

If you were going to go skiing for the first time you would take lessons. If you tried to learn on your own it would take a very long time to “figure it out”. It should come as no surprise that you should have a professional program when you go to the gym. But, more times than not people come to the gym and randomly do workouts based on things they hear from their friends or even worse, what they see on TV. Getting help can make all the difference especially since people usually drop out when they don’t see results right away.

Hope to see you in camp… http://all4sportsandfitness.com/fitness-center/fitness-boot-camp/

Reason #5 of Why You Should Be in Boot Camp on Monday: WE KEEP YOU ACCOUNTABLE

You know that little voice in your head that can rationalize anything. You know the one that says, just one more potato chip won’t hurt, or relax you can go to the gym next week. Well when you are in the Fitness Boot Camp you will not only have us waiting for you at the sessions but you will also be responsible to hand in a nutrition log each week. This will silence that inner voice that will sabotage you every time.

Hope to see you in camp… http://all4sportsandfitness.com/fitness-center/fitness-boot-camp/

Reason #6 of Why You Should Be in Boot Camp on Monday: YOU WILL GET A DISCOUNT ON THE 8-WEEK METABOLISM MAKEOVER NUTRITION PROGRAM

The 8-Week Online Nutrition Program will teach you everything you need to know about nutrition from the comfort of your own home. Each lesson will be delivered to you on the web in video format… Check out the details here in this short video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kt6bWoKiY84&feature=player_embedded

Hope to see you in camp… http://all4sportsandfitness.com/fitness-center/fitness-boot-camp/

Reason #7 of Why You Should Be in Boot Camp on Monday: FOOTBALL SEASON JUST STARTED AND YOU LOVE WINGS AND BEER

What you need to realize if you haven’t already is that you are a product (to a certain extent) of your habits and environment. I use the football, wings, and beer analogy to be funny but really think about your lifestyle and how it contributes to your health and fitness. Do the decisions and actions you make on a day-to-day basis contribute to being out of shape? How are you going to get back in shape if you don’t make different decisions going forward? How quickly do you think you would get in shape if you broke out of these habits?

Hope to see you in camp… http://all4sportsandfitness.com/fitness-center/fitness-boot-camp/

Reason #8 of Why You Should Be in Boot Camp on Monday: ROB THE TRAINER IS REALLY GOOD LOOKING

Alright, I am just trying to be funny. But he really is good looking.

Hope to see you in camp… http://all4sportsandfitness.com/fitness-center/fitness-boot-camp/

Reason #9 of Why You Should Be in Boot Camp on Monday: YOU WANT TO GET BACK IN SHAPE AND ARE OUT OF EXCUSES

I don’t have enough time, I don’t have the money, I don’t have the motivation. What if your life depended on it? Would you find a way to make the time, get the money, and generate the motivation? You either can find a way to make something possible or stay attached to excuses. Or you could just admit to yourself that you don’t want it that bad. In a lot of ways accepting your condition is much healthier than stressing that you want to get in shape and never taking action.

Hope to see you in camp… http://all4sportsandfitness.com/fitness-center/fitness-boot-camp/

Reason #10 of Why You Should Be in Boot Camp on Monday: I PROMISE THAT YOU WILL HAVE FUN AND WE WILL HELP YOU EVERY STEP OF THE WAY

Keeping exercise fun can be the most difficult thing to do but with a community like Fitness Boot Camp it is easy to create that environment. We work out on the beach, have events, and competitions, an online support website as well as lots of great people who help newcomers get acclimated. You will have the most fun you have ever had exercising.

Hope to see you in camp… http://all4sportsandfitness.com/fitness-center/fitness-boot-camp/

For me it’s back to writing my blog on a consistent basis. When other seemingly more important things get in the way it is easy to lose motivation to do the things that may not give you immediate gratification but will show significant dividends in the long term. One key to motivation in the long term is realizing “why” you want to do something. Too many times we get focused on the “how”. We dwell on “how the heck am I going to lose all this weight”, “how am I going to organize this mess”. This can be overwhelming and demotivating. It will trigger the exact opposite of what you want to feel when approaching a workout, task, or situation. Focusing on the “why” is not only uplifting and positive… It also allows for the brain to process more clearly based on how you perceive information and in what sequence. Check out this awesome video featuring Simon Sinek which explains this concept. He talks primarily about business and leadership but can also apply to you leading yourself… It may make all the difference for you in whatever you are trying to change.

At the event I had a booth set up where I answered training and nutrition questions as well as put young football players and cheerleaders through the Functional Movement Screen.

Each player that participated will receive a specific warm up based on their physical limitations.

The warm up will not only get them ready before they play but overtime can change their efficiency of movement which can decrease risk of injury and improve performance.

It was really great to see stars of such magnitude really take the time to speak to and teach the young aspiring players .

Steffi actually spent three hours on court instructing!

I have never seen a pro athlete spend that much time and attention and it was great to be a part of an event where all the players were truly served.

At the workshop we implemented Functional Movement Screens for about 45 of the top female players in the New York Area.

From the screens they all will receive a specific warm up that they can do to address their limitations.

I’ll tell you what it is not….

It is not some crappy infomercial product that sits in the corner of your room…

It is not an expensive magic supplement that promises to make your friend rich…

And, it is definitely not a fitness program with low rate trainers that just count your reps for you.

The month of August is typically when you may let your fitness slide (if you haven’t already this summer).

So what I decided to do was to set up an offer that you can’t refuse.

Here’s what is going on:

Our 1st online Metabolism Makeover Class is in it’s fourth week and the feedback has been terrific.

I even met with a participant today who has lost 13 lbs. already!!

In addition, the Fitness Boot Camp starts a new phase on Monday….

And guess what?

It is the Power Endurance Phase which is mostly geared towards fat loss!

So I was thinking, what a PERFECT opportunity to offer you both programs together at a discount.

Knowing the success of our campers over the years and the huge impact that correct nutrition can play on your health and fitness… this is a program not to be missed….

THE ULTIMATE TOTAL BODY FAT LOSS PROGRAM

Here are the details:

The 8-Week Online Metabolism Makeover Nutrition Program was priced at $125

And a Phase of Fitness Boot Camp costs $167

But, for a limited time (this weekend) you can get both for only $197.

That’s $292 worth of training and program for only $197!!
